Why We Must Have Sharp Discernment (and Use It!)

Speaking of the devil, Jesus said,

“He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies.” John 8:44

Satan truly is a lying thief that comes only to kill, steal, and destroy (John 10:10).

Therefore it is extremely important for us to depend upon the Lord and use great discernment

-to know, listen, and obey God’s voice

-and to recognize, reject, and resist the enemy’s lies (1 Peter 5:8,9).

Do not just blindly agree with the enemy’s accusations and ploys (without even realizing it). Be aware.

We are clearly warned that Satan disguises himself as an angel of light (2 Cor. 11:14) and that his servants disguise themselves as servants of righteousness (2 Cor. 11:15).

This means they may be hard to recognize, right? And we can expect that many of the unsuspecting may never recognize the wolves among them in sheep’s clothing (Matt. 7:15).

Our discernment must be sharp and must not be neglected.

Help us not to forget these truths as we experience resistance from people. Our battle is not against ‘people,’ even though that is often the packaging the enemy uses (Eph. 6:12).

May we press beyond that resistance and the blinding work of the enemy (2 Cor. 4:4) and love people enough to speak the truth that the enemy does not want them to hear.

Lord, open our eyes and ears, that Your people will see and hear and be unable to keep You and Your love to themselves (Acts 4:20).

Open our mouths to speak forth, proclaim, preach, and herald the good news

Go.   Make disciples.   Baptize.    Teach them all that He has commanded.

“…and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Matt. 28:19,20

Pray Against the Spirit of Offense

It is a lofty opinion raised up against the knowledge of God and the loving mission He has placed upon us to think that we must keep silent, saying nothing that would be offensive (to a world that is extremely offended), and keep to ourselves our beliefs and what Scripture clearly proclaims as truth (2 Cor. 10:5).

We must not fall for the schemes of the enemy (2 Cor. 2:11).

On the contrary, we must stand firm against those schemes (Eph. 6:11).

We have weapons of warfare that are divinely powerful to destroy the speculations and vain imaginations that make us fearful. We are to, and are enabled to, take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ (2 Cor. 10:3,4,5).

And God has not given us a spirit of fearfulness (cowardice or timidity), but “of power and of love and of calm and well balanced mind and discipline and self control” (2 Timothy 1:7 Amplified).

May we live from that place of strength and not back down, but rather pray and speak freely.

Pray against ‘the spirit of offense’ that whispers that everything of God is ‘offensive and must be put to a stop’. This ‘offendedness’ is a great ploy of the enemy, as what is deemed as offensive is exactly that which has the power to save (Romans 1:16). Therefore it must be freely spoken in truth¹.

May we love people enough to speak the truth in love (Eph.4:14,15,16).

We must not give way to fear.

May we put on our armor (Eph 6:13-20),

take the authority we have in Jesus Christ,

use our weapons of warfare (not forgetting that we are in a battle– Eph.6:12),

be filled with the Holy Spirit, and speak the word of God with boldness (Acts 4:31).

Give Heed to God and Speak of What You Have Seen and Heard

“…they commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus. But Peter and John answered and said to them, ‘Whether it is right in the sight of God to give heed to you rather than to God, you be the judge; for we cannot stop speaking about what we have seen and heard.” Acts 4:18,19

There is an enemy at work who knows and understands the power of the gospel (Romans 1:16):

the power that not only effects a life for all eternity, but also radically infuses power into the daily here and now (Eph. 1:18,19), effecting every life that precious one touches.

So, of course, Satan does not want that good news proclaimed or the truth taught, and thus he attempts to silence us.

May we not heed the devil’s feeble threats (1 Peter 5:8,9) and the fears and vain speculations (2 Cor. 10:5 NASB) of how awkward or offended we may make someone feel if we love them with

the only true source of Life and Love and Hope and Peace and Mercy

which they are desperately searching for.

May we not listen to the enemy who would like to convince us to “speak no longer to any man in this name,” but rather may this be our ‘song’:

“..we cannot stop speaking about what we have seen and heard.”

Sow the ‘seed’

“to open their eyes so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the dominion of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who have been sanctified by faith in Me.” Acts 26:18

Sow the Seed

Do not be afraid.

Do not fear or live in terror.

The resurrected ‘I AM’ has conquered sin and death.

Go preach this good news.

Just because people ‘don’t want to hear it’, which is ONLY because the enemy is at work and doesn’t want them to hear it, should not keep you quiet about the hope that you have.

To use the fact that people are offended by the good news as an excuse for keeping the saving truth of the gospel hidden away from them would only be giving into the scheme of the enemy (2 Cor. 2:11 NASB).

Don’t do that!

Be ready in and out of season to share the hope that you have (2 Timothy 4:2, 1 Peter 3:15).

Fruit takes time, and the process does not even begin without the seed first being sown.

Go.

Make disciples.

Teaching them EVERYTHING that I have commanded (Matthew 28:18-20).

If you ‘pick’ and ‘choose’, you ‘steal’ and ‘lose’.

Sow the seed.

What Does it Really Mean to Be ‘Successful’?

Obedience IS ‘success’.

As you step out and do what God is calling you to do, you already have your success story.

Any and all ‘results‘ are HIS success. God truly is the only One Who can change a heart or bring about any type of change.

So our question needs to be,

“What are You calling me to do?”

And then our responsibility is simply to obey,

following Jesus’ example Who said, “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me and to accomplish His work.” John 4:34

Be faithful to do the work

and faithful to leave the results up to Him, The Change Maker.

Where then is boasting? It is excluded (Romans 3:27).

Where is ‘worry’ and despair about the lack of results? It is taken to prayer (Phil. 4:6).

Period.

Listen to these words from Daily with the King by W. Glyn Evans as it expresses this very same thought beautifully:

“I must learn what Jesus learned: ‘to be obedient unto death’ (Philippians 2:8, KJV). All true obedience is unto death. That is a reversal of the world’s standard. ‘I will obey if’ is what the world says. The if means there must be a happy ending. Anyone will meet conditions, even drastic ones, if he gets his own way in the end. But that is not the obedience of Christ. His example was, ‘I will obey regardless.‘ For Him the ‘regardless’ was not a heavenly deliverance but a cross.

True obedience is always successful. It always accomplishes God’s will. It is immaterial to me whether my cancer is cured, my promotion achieved, or my loved one saved. If I have obeyed, that is enough. I am successful. Beyond that, it is God’s business. If I insist on a happy, selfish outcome, then I am meddling. The instant I obey, success is automatic–God’s success, not mine. Therefore, obedience carries in itself its burst of praise. I am jubilant, not because my ship has come in, but because it has gone out. Maybe I will never see it again, but that is beside the point. The point is, I have launched it unto God and now He is responsible. So I praise God because He is working and I rest in His activity.

I must be careful to obey for obedience’s sake, and to love obedience for the Lord’s sake. What a level to live on, loving it for His sake! In this I have the example of my Master, who said, ‘I delight to do your will, my God’ (Psalm 40:8, TLB).”    (January 9th’s entry)

Follow Him and have success everywhere you go.

He will lead you.

Ask.

And walk in moment by moment obedience.
